Mandate:
The
ACTRA Additional Background Committee is responsible for giving background performers
(who are not Full or Apprentice members) a voice within the union
and the ability to work together to improve the terms and conditions
of their work through collective action. The elected Chairperson,
Vice-chairperson and Secretary of the Caucus are responsible for
representing ACTRA Additional Background Performers within the councils of ACTRA and for administering
the work of the caucus.

UPDATE!
In addition to the general increase negotiated for all members, ACTRA negotiated a further 4% increase in the first year of the contract for Additional Background Performers. This will come into effect upon ratification of the new IPA.
Additional Background Performers will receive the following increases over the life of the contract:
As of February 19, 2007 – 3%
Upon ratification – 4%
As of January 1, 2008 – 3%
As of January 1, 2009 – 3%

| Additional Background Performer members are now entitled to apply for Apprentice membership provided they have documented evidence of 200 days or 1600 hours of background work on ACTRA sets over the previous 4 years with a minimum of 200 hours or 20 days during the previous 12 months. |

How
to join as an ACTRA Additional Background Performer!

There are many advantages to becoming an ACTRA Additional Background Performer.
By becoming an ACTRA Additional Background Performer you are joining Canada's largest professional
performers' union. You will be protected by ACTRA collective agreements
and have input into the bargaining process as it affects your wages
and working conditions. ACTRA Additional Background Performers will have the benefit of the
union's negotiating power with producers that through the collective
bargaining process will result in:
Better wages
Better working conditions
Improved job opportunities
Better protection under ACTRA's collective agreements
Other advantages include the creation of an ACTRA Additional Background Committee (within
larger Branches) to identify and investigate on-set issues of concern
to ACTRA Additional Background Performers, monitor relations between performers and agents,
look at the establishment of a central casting system to better
protect and promote background performers, and debate and present
proposals to ACTRA's negotiating committees.
What do I need to become an ACTRA Additional Background Performer?
To be eligible as an ACTRA Additional Background Performer, you must prove
that you have worked as a Background Performer 24 days within a
12-month period immediately preceding your application for membership.
What will happen when I apply?
You will be asked to apply in person at your local ACTRA Branch
office. You will be asked to complete an application form, present
proof of your 24 work days as a Background performer and to provide
a current photo.
Why do I have to provide a photo and resume to ACTRA?
ACTRA is asking for a photo and resume in order to provide ACTRA Additional Background Performer members with a membership photo ID card and for inclusion
in the ACTRA member database. In addition, with the membership card,
ACTRAAdditional Background Performers will be able to access member affinity programs.
Will I be asked to pay anything?
Yes. At the time of application you will have to pay $30 basic dues.
In the future, ACTRA Additional Background Performers will be expected to pay regular dues.
How do I maintain my membership?
To maintain your membership you will have to work 15 workdays as
a Background Performer during a period of 12 consecutive months
measured from March 1st of each year.
Important update on joining as an ACTRA Additional Background Performer
Initiation fee removed for ACTRA Additional Background Performers
ACTRA Toronto has temporarily removed the $75 initiation fee for
those background performers who wish to join ACTRA under the new
membership category, ACTRA Additional Background Performers. New members will still be expected
to meet the qualifications, including the $30 basic dues, outlined
on the ACTRA website and in ACTRA materials.
