Canadian stars call for action on Status of the Artist in Ontario

May 10, 2006 - More than 40 performers including some of Canada’s best-known stars descended on Queen’s Park to urge Ontario politicians to take action for artists. In the 2003 election, the Liberals promised to take action on Status of the Artist. Time is running out on this government’s mandate. The ACTRA Toronto members met with Ministers, party leaders and MPPs and held a well-attended news conference in the Ontario legislative building at Queen’s Park.

Responding to a pointed question from NDP Leader Howard Hampton during Question Period, the Minister of Culture, Ms. Caroline Di Cocco, said she intends to act on some of these issues by late fall. ACTRA Toronto will keep up the pressure to ensure the minister follows through.

ACTRA Toronto is calling on the government to introduce Status of the Artist legislation to address the unique nature of how artists work covering areas such as protection for child performers, career transition and training, income averaging and dignity for older artists.
