................................................................. ACTRA Welcomes Change in OttawaDecember 12 - Toronto – ACTRA is optimistic about today's change in leadership in the federal government and welcomes the new approaches and ideas Prime Minister Martin and his new cabinet will bring to tackling the challenges facing Canada's film and TV industry. “We have been encouraged in our previous conversations with Prime Minister Martin by his support for Canadian culture and programming in the past, and we look forward to working with him and his new Cabinet ministers to ensure that our industry is given the immediate support and investment it needs,” says Stephen Waddell, Executive Director, ACTRA. Canada 's domestic television industry has been in crisis over the past several years, as a result of CRTC regulations that don't hold broadcasters and producers accountable and last year's budget cuts to the Canadian Television Fund. The fate of next year's drama season on Canadian television hangs in the balance over the next few months. Funding and regulations need to be urgently addressed or a final collapse may be in the offing. ACTRA urges the new leadership to carry through with its commitment to long-term and stable financial investment in the Canadian Television Fund. “We look forward to working with the new Cabinet on this critical issue,“ says Waddell. “A healthy and vibrant film and television industry benefits our society as a whole, with its contributions to our economy, national identity, and cultural development.”
