Offered once each quarter, this course is a requirement for new members of the ACTRA Additional Background Performers and provides an introduction to ACTRA, and useful information to help AABP members become more involved and active in the business and as well as in the work of the Union.

ACTRA/DGC Courses

ACTRA Toronto, together with the DGC (Directors Guild Canada) have recently launched 2 joint sessions to be held once a month to equip our Members with helpful tools that they can bring with them to set.  The workshops run for 3 hours each.  Members are welcome to sign up for one session or both.   These workshops are free to ACTRA Toronto Members.  Spaces are limited hurry and sign up today!!

Session Topics

“It’s not part of the job” - Preventing and Dealing with Harassment     9:30am-12:30pm

This 3 hour session helps members better prevent and deal with harassment on-set. Ontario law now requires productions to post and enforce anti-harassment and violence prevention policies.  ACTRA Toronto and the DGC are committed to safe, harassment-free workplaces.  We encourage all members to attend this session.

Topics covered include:

  • What is harassment?
  • Why is harassment an issue for ACTRA and the DGC?
  • How to deal with harassment: strategies and tips
  • The Law, Collective Agreement language and our policies

This is an interactive workshop with discussion, role plays and simulated situations. Come prepared to engage and participate.

“Set talk”: Film Set Etiquette and Staying Safe    1:30pm-4:30pm

This 3 hour session to provide an overview of the “set” and how to stay healthy and safe in the business. It is open to all ACTRA Toronto and DGC members.

Topics covered include:          

  • What’s on a call sheet?
  • Overview of a typical day
  • Who’s who on set
  • Set etiquette: do’s and don’ts
  • Acronyms and set lingo
  • Health and Safety: awareness, prevention, and dealing with accidents and injuries

Full Member Session

Full or Apprentice members take the Full Member Session to ensure they have a solid grounding in the business aspects of being a professional performer. Course topics include audition protocols, an overview of ACTRA's collective agreements and how ACTRA works.

Completion of the Full Member Session is a mandatory requirement for Full ACTRA membership.

Logistics and Time Commitment

Second City Training Incentive for Diverse Performers

Are you a FULL ACTRA Member from a culturally diverse background? Second City is offering a 4-week workshop at a generously reduced rate! This course is designed to introduce working actors to the Improvisational Theatre Technique developed by The Second City.

Dates: Fridays, February 8th, 15th, 22nd and March 1st
Class Times: 3-5pm
Location: The Second City Training Centre 51 Mercer Street, Studio 9, Toronto
Instructor: Kevin Frank, Artistic Director of The Second City Training & Education Program in Toronto
Fee: $50+HST for all four weeks

Performance Capture Training Workshops

Performance capture is quickly becoming one of the most useful animation techniques for video games and feature films, opening up new work opportunities for performers who have the necessary skills. ACTRA Toronto and Sheridan College's Screen Industries Research and Training Centre (SIRT) invite you to our first set of performance capture workshops, developed with Ubisoft Toronto Cinematics Director, David Footman.

These workshops are available exclusively to ACTRA Toronto members, at no cost. Space is limited so register early.

Performance Capture, Level 1

In this informative 60 minute seminar, you will begin to explore the basic concepts, practices and terminology of virtual production and performance capture.

Performance Capture, Level 2

All Level 2 workshop participants must first complete the Level 1 seminar in order to register. Space is limited to six actors per session. Additional sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.

Slip on a motion capture suit and step into a virtual set in this hands-on beginner workshop. Watch your performance animate virtual characters in real time, as you begin experimenting with performance capture.

Motion capture suits provided. When registering, please indicate whether you wear an XS, S, M, L or XL shirt and pant size.
